My gr grandfather Washington B. Coates was in the civil war. He enlisted Sept. 1861 and mustered out June 1865 having reached the rank of sargent. He was in the Army of the Cumberland in the Fifth Wisconsin Battery Light Artillery. He was in 22 engagements and twice taken prisoner, one time in Libbey prison. My gr grandfather was from Monticello.
     Washington had 2 younger brothers also in the civil war for a short time; Hamilton J. Coates Aug. 1864 to June 1865 and Elisha M. Coates Feb. 1864 to June 1865. This is all I know about the brothers. -- Dennis Coates dwcoates@hotmail.com


My husband's great-great grandfather Frederick Divan was in CO. D, 36th Inf. Reg. WI.  He enlisted 22 February 1863 as a Private.  He was born in 1821 in OH and died 4 June 1898 in Beloit, WI.  He was the son of Jonathan A. Divan and Catherine Shrake.  Frederick married Hannah Cessna, daughter of John Cessna and Mary Ann McVicker, on 9 February 1842 in Coshocton Co., OH.   Frederick and Hannah had 11 known children.  My husband is descended from their son Frederick K. My great grandfather, William Mc Cauliff (who had the second C dropped while in  the service making his line Mc Auliff ) served in the 6th Wisconsin Infantry, during the Civil War.  He had gone to CA and returned in 1864 to serve in the later years of the Iron Brigade.  Cathy Rossing, CA  Catross@aol.com
