Maria BALDWIN
Maria Baldwin was born March 30, 1825 in New Lisbon, Lawrence Co., NY and was married to Samuel Copeland Oct. 9, 1845.  They moved to Canada in the early part of their married life.  From there they came to this country in March, 1860, living at Monroe about 15 years.  At Juda Sister Copeland united with the Baptist Church, when Rev. G.R. Patton was pastor.  She joined the M.E. Church of this place by letter in June, 1888 and has been a faithful member from that time until the day of her death, July 15, 1890.  She severed her connection with the church militant to join the church triumphant.  It seems somewhat difficult to find the exact date of her conversion.  We can go back as far as 1842, but how much nearer her childhood than that, we cannot tell.  She probably, like Timothy, knew the Scriptures from her youth up; yea and the love of God also.  “she hath done what she could” to make those around her happy in this life and in the life which is to come.  She did indeed let her light shine before all, that they might be led to glorify her Father which is in Heaven.  She leaves behind to mourn their loss a husband, two daughters and two sons, all present during her last hours except her elder son, Samuel.  These have the sympathy of all; the prayers of the church and over them the watchful eye of Him who never sleeps and sweetly says:  “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”  The funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Thursday afternoon, July 17, conducted by the pastor, who spoke from the 15th verse of the 116th Psalm and also from Mark 14, 8th verse.  J.F. Cowling, pastor

Surnames: Bentson, Hurlburt, Crowell
Died at his residence in this city on Sunday Feb. 18, 1894, Mr. Peter Benston, aged 51 years, 5 months and 10 days.  Peter Benston was born in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, Sept. 8, 1842.  His parents emigrated to Canada when he was a small boy and lived there about two years, when they came to Wisconsin and located in Walworth County.  After three years they moved to Green County where, in the townships of New Glarus and York he grew to manhood.  He had six brothers, of whom five survive him.  On the 10th day of December, 1863, he enlisted in Co. K. 16th Regiment Wis. Inf. Vol., and served with honor until the close of the war, sharing in all the battles, hardships and exposure of that famous regiment.  He was wounded in the shoulder in the battle of Atlanta, Georgia, the effects of which he felt more or less until his death.  He was twice married.  On the 10th day of December, 1865 he was married to Miss Emily Hurlburt.  They were blessed with one child, but in less than two years both wife and child were called away by death.  On the 27th of November, 1869, he was married to Miss Ada Crowell, a cousin of his first wife, who survives him, together with a large circle of relatives and friends.  In 1882 Mr. Bentson removed to Albany, where he has since made his home.  His occupation was farming.  He was converted and united with the Free Will Baptist Church in January, 1878, of which he remained a member until two years ago.  Exactly two years from the night he died he united with the Baptist church of this place, of which he has been an earnest, faithful member.  He was an active, public spirited citizen of our village, prominent in every right movement for the development and progress of his town.  He was a good and loving husband, a firm friend, and kind hearted neighbor, always ready to help the needy.  He always had a kind word and cheery smile for every one he met.  The family, the church and the community unite in saying “A good man ahs gone home”.

Marvin BROUGHTON
Died at Whitewater, on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1892, Marvin Broughton, only son of Mr. And Mrs. Albert Broughton, of Albany, aged 22 years and 2 days.  Deceased had returned to the school at Whitewater less than three weeks previous to his death.  He had subsequently attended two terms of school there and by his genial ways and gentlemanly deportment both in school and in the athletic sports won all as his friends.  We copy from the Whitewater Register of Sept. 15, an account of his illness and death:
“Sorrow at the Normal  In our Normal items will be found mention of Marvin Broughton’s sudden illness an death.  An experience of this kind is new to the school and the deepest sadness prevails through every department, and has aroused the earnest sympathy of all the Whitewater people.  Marvin was one of the most popular students in the school, he occupied a high rank in his class, was generous, kindly, sincere and trustworthy; and in all athletic sports and games he was easily the leader.  Last Friday he played a game of football with his usual energy, and Saturday he worked hard at cutting corn.  That night he ate heartily and soon after was taken with vomiting, which continued during the night.  His medical attendants suspected obstruction of the bowels, but were unable to afford any relief.  As the case became critical Marvin’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. Albert Broughton, were sent for and came from Albany.  Yesterday morning Dr. H. Palmer came from Janesville and performed an operation, assisted by Dr. Carey.  It was found that the small and large intestines were telescoped about eight inches, and had adhered together.  The necessary reduction was performed, but his surrounding parts showed such inflammation and gangrenous condition that very little hope was entertained of recovery, and the final end speedily followed.  A brief service was held at the house this morning at 7:30, conducted by Rev. E. C. Barnard, and the remains were taken to Albany on the 8:45 train, the faculty and students going to the station in a body.  The following fellow students went as escort:  Frank Noble, James Penn, David Kelly and Frank Worthington.  On Saturday A.P. West and J.K. Orvis will join them and the six will officiate as bearers at the final obsequies”.
Prof. Albert Salisbury, President, Prof. Shultz, Professor of Mathematics and three delegates from as many different societies of the Normal School also came out on Saturday to attend the funeral service, which was held at the M.E. Church in Albany Saturday, conducted by Rev. W.W. Stevens, of Evansville.
Marvin was born in the town of Albany Sept. 12, 1870, growing to manhood’s estate in this vicinity.  Being of a genial disposition, he has made friends of all who knew him.  As a member of the Grange, Patrons of Industry and Good Templars, he has been an active worker, holding several offices of honor and recently filled a very creditable term of office as Chief Templar of the Albany Lodge.

Mary Josephine BROUGHTON
Surnames: Broughton, Coburn, Mitchell
Mary Josephine Broughton (born Coburn) was born in Troy, Walworth Co., Wisconsin June 6, 1849 and died at her home in Albany March 22, 1897.  When but 18 months old she was taken by Mr. And Mrs. Samuel Mitchell to their home and raised by them to womanhood.  She was tenderly cared for, and greatly loved by her foster parents.  She very early manifested those noble traits of character, which greatly endeared her to all, and especially those who cared for her.  They loved her as they would their own child.  She was married to William Broughton on Sept. 17, 1871.  The fruits of this marriage were three children—two daughters and one son—who, with the bereaved husband, mourn her death.  Mrs. Broughton was a most excellent woman, possessing those rare endowments and accomplishments that always command respect.  She was truly a womanly woman.  Happy when she could make others happy; and to accomplish this no sacrifice was too great.  She greatly loved her home.  Her motto was:  “Make home what it should be then it will be appreciated”.  That she succeeded all the family testify.  She was an affectionate wife and an indulgent mother.  We often wonder why one so much needed and so capable of filling her place in life is called away.  Said the princess:  “Why is the gardener plucking the most choice flowers and in such profusion?”  The answer was “To decorate in honor of the prince”.  We suppose God wants some of the choice flowers of earth in order to decorate in honor of He, who is Prince Royal of Heaven.  His hand gathers them in from one end of the land to the other.  The dear Father knows what is best.  The home will not be what it was; wife is gone, mother is gone.  But God will bless them land keep them and has, already, in the rifted cloud, shown them the silver lining.  “He doeth all things well”.  The funeral took place at the M.E. Church on March 25, conducted by Rev. C.C. Swartz.  It was very largely attended.  The floral offerings by friends were profuse.  Her body was committed to the earth until the resurrection.  C.C.S.

Thomas BUFTON
Surnames: Bufton, Jones
Thomas Bufton was born in Llanbister, County of Radnorshire, South Wales, in the year 1840.  He came to Albany, Wisconsin about the year 1868, and was married to Ellen Jones August 19, 1870.  Eight children were born to them; three now living, five having preceded the father to their resting place.  He died Sept. 12, 1900, leaving his widow, two sons and one daughter to mourn their loss.  About twenty-three years ago he and his wife united with the Baptist Church and they have been active members up to the time of his death.  He died a true Christian, praising God as long as he could speak.  He said during his last hours that he, like Paul, had fought a good fight and had kept the faith, and was ready to submit to God’s will.  The funeral was held Friday, Sept. 14, 1900.  After a short service at the house the body was conveyed to the Union Church in the English settlement, where the sermon was preached by Rev. H. B. Gibbons, assisted by a quartet from the Baptist choir.  Many relatives and sympathizing friends followed the body from the house to the church, about sixty teams being in the procession.  The interment took place in the cemetery adjoining the church.  The service at the grave was conducted by the Modern Woodmen of America, of which the deceased was an honored member.  The members of the Albany Baptist Church unite with me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to the widow and children of our deceased brother.

Mrs. Ricke BUSS
Memoirs of Mrs. Ricke Buss, born in Germany Sept. 13, 1852, died in the town of Brooklyn, Wis., July 24, 1899.  She leaves a husband and two sons.  If we could live forever here we might care but little for each other.  The fact that we must die, the feast must end, brings our hearts and paths together and treads out the weeds that grow between.
Call not back the dear departed,
Anchored safe where storms are o’er.
On the border land we left her
Soon to meet and part no more;
There, beyond all earthly changes,
There, beyond this world of care,
We will find the missing loved one
In our Father’s Mansions there.
H.B. Brenaman
